It’s probably not technically Japanese, but this is a recipe my mom always used to make us as kids and for some reason, we called it Japanese beef. The meat does sort of taste like the beef you get when you go to a hibachi steakhouse, so I guess that’s how we came up with the name. Flavored with simple ingredients like garlic, ginger, and wine this dish is simple to make and yet full of flavor. The other great thing about this dish is that it only calls for a few ingredients and most likely, you won’t have to go shopping for anything because you will probably already have these things on hand.

As kids we always loved this and as an adult, I still love it because its an incredibly easy recipe and great for a quick week night dinner. So here it is, my mom’s “Japanese” beef recipe.


2-3 tbsp red wine

1/4 cup soy sauce

1/2 tsp grated fresh ginger (or powdered if you don’t have the fresh)

1 small onion chopped

4 garlic cloves minced

1 tbsp oil for stir frying

1 lb. beef cut into small cubes or thinly sliced

scallions or cilantro (optional) for garnish

Combine red wine, soy sauce, ginger, garlic, and onion in a bowl. Coat the steak in the mixture and let the steak marinate for at least 30-40 minutes.

Heat the oil in a large skillet over HIGH heat. Once the pan is hot, add the meat and the marinade to the pan and stir fry until the meat is cooked all the way through.

Transfer to a serving bowl or plate and garnish with scallion slices or chopped cilantro. Serve with Jasmine rice and enjoy!
