I’m in the phase of life where many of my friends and peers are getting married. About three weeks ago, I was a bridesmaid in my friend’s wedding in Vermont and just this past weekend, I flew to Miami for a whirlwind bachelorette celebration for another friend who asked me to be a bridesmaid in her September wedding. I was looking forward to both occasions, but to be honest was not expecting to enjoy them as much as I actually did. I knew they would be fun, but I didn’t realize how much I truly needed these mini vacations.
I travel quite frequently. In fact, it’s kind of a running joke between myself and family and friends that know me well. People will often ask Matt and I, “hey, it’s been a few months, aren’t you guys due to fly to an island of some sort?” and it’s true. We generally travel somewhere every few months but it’s actually rare for me to plan shorter weekend getaways or mini vacations, so to speak. One of my goals is to travel to 30 countries before I turn 30, so I’m generally set on traveling to places I’ve never been before. It doesn’t occur to me to travel to places within the United States, because, duh, I’ve been there!
These two weekend getaways reminded me how fun and beneficial mini vacations can be. Although they were short, a bit of a whirlwind, and involved some stress, they were refreshing and liberating, for a number of different reasons.
Ludlow, Vermont – To be honest, I wasn’t particularly thrilled about going to Vermont. I’d been to Vermont many times in the past, mostly for skiing. Matt’s family used to go to Killington every year, so I felt like I was pretty familiar with Vermont. However, I’d never been to Vermont in the spring. Everything about the weekend was wonderful. First of all, Vermont is beautiful in the spring. The first thing I noticed was how green everything was. I felt renewed and relaxed just looking at the scenery around me. Between the mountains, lakes and trees, some of the views were absolutely breathtaking. The wedding took place at the Echo Lake Inn in Ludlow. The staff at the inn were incredibly friendly, the inn itself was charming and comfortable, and the wedding went off without a hitch. I would highly recommend the Inn, and taking the short walk to Echo Lake is an absolute must!
Miami, Florida – Although I love to travel with Matt, sometimes it’s nice to get away with friends and have some much needed girl time, which is exactly what this Miami trip provided for me. We stayed at The Shore Club in South Beach and enjoyed about 48 hours of amazing beaches, nightlife and food. Like I said, a whirlwind, but totally worth it. Although I didn’t get much sleep, I came back feeling refreshed and rejuvinated.
Obviously, planning big trips and exotic vacations is totally amazing and something I love to do, but I had underestimated the power of the mini vacation. Turns out it was just what I needed.
